The History Curriculum at St Mary's

At St Mary’s we aim for our pupils to have a secure chronological understanding of the past in both Britain and that of the wider world.  We want to inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past and for this to remain with them in the future. Within History they will also learn to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

Teachers will place high importance on the acquisition of historical vocabulary in order to promote better understanding. Through their learning, children will be able to order events from the earliest times to the present day, making explicit links to prior knowledge in order to gain historical perspective.

Children will be taught to use methods of historical enquiry to find out about the past and think critically about evidence used to make historical claims. This will include significant aspects of British history, including events pertinent to our locality.  Our curriculum also focuses on the history of the wider world and its impact on Britain past and present.

We believe our children will benefit from experiencing enhancement activities and trips within the history curriculum and aim to offer these for many of our units.
