Modern Foreign Languages
The Spanish Curriculum at St Mary's
At St Mary’s, we recognise that modern foreign languages play a vital part in ensuring that children have a greater knowledge and understanding of the world and an awareness of the possibilities open to them in their future lives and careers. It is our intention that, by the end of Key Stage Two, all children are will have developed a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, finding them enjoyable and stimulating.
Through the Speekee schemes of work, at St Mary’s we can ensure that we offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious foreign languages curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils using a wide variety of topics and themes, such as weather, shopping and sounds.
We would like all pupils to feel confident and able to continue their language studies beyond Key Stage Two and be excited by the Spanish history and culture.
Within our scheme of work, we will be able to deliver lessons that offer clear learning objectives in line with the National Curriculum requirements, which build upon pupils’ prior learning and ensure age-appropriate progression as they move through Key Stage Two. Speekee is a flexible scheme of work that provides quality resources and can respond to the needs of all learners.
Learning Platforms
The four key language-learning skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing will be taught and all necessary grammar will be covered in an age-appropriate way across the primary phase using a wide variety of resources. This will enable pupils to use and apply their learning in a variety of contexts, laying down solid foundations for future language learning. Our Spanish curriculum will also assist pupils to improve attainment in other subject areas, such as the inclusion of Spanish cooking techniques, which also helps pupils to meet many of the requirements of the D&T National Curriculums.
In addition to this, children will learn about the history and culture of Spain, developing a deeper understanding of the world around them and helping them to develop a positive curiosity for other cultures. We intend that through our Spanish curriculum, children develop a better understanding of language, identity and different cultures and cultivate an enthusiasm and enjoyment of foreign languages that enables them to become life-long language learners.
