The PE Curriculum at St Mary's

At St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, we recognise the importance of PE and the role it has to play in promoting long term, healthy lifestyles. We are very fortunate to have excellent facilities for PE and sports that enable us to provide all children with high quality PE and sport provision. We have a large school field, running track, three playgrounds, a large school hall, a wide range of sports equipment and an indoor swimming pool.

It is our vision for every pupil at St Mary's Catholic Primary School to succeed and achieve their potential and an important part of this includes teaching children how to lead physically active lifestyles. We strive to inspire our pupils through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. We also endeavour to provide additional sporting opportunities for the children and we are currently hosting extra-curricular clubs in physical fitness and skills development, karate, gymnastics and dance.

Through our teaching of PE, we will not only provide opportunities for pupils to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding across the PE curriculum, we also seek to develop opportunities for the children to practice and embed our learning values of: resilience, independence, responsibility, reflection, collaboration and creativity.

Within the teaching of PE, we promote important values and transferrable life skills, such as fairness and respect, as well as providing children with opportunities to take part in competitive sport. Our children are all assigned to one of our four Houses: St George, St Patrick, St Andrew and St David. The children take part in inter-house sporting events, as well as local and county level sports competitions and local 'friendly' events.

All teachers teach PE each week and we have a specialist, qualified swimming teacher to deliver swimming lessons to all children over the course of the academic year.  The children in Years One to Six swim for three terms a year and the Reception children swim for two terms. We pride ourselves on striving to ensure that all the children can swim to National Curriculum standards by the time they leave at the end of Year Six and we provide additional swimming lessons for children where necessary, to achieve this.
