Lectio Divina
Thu 22 May 2025In school, we have been learning about different forms of prayer. One form of prayer which we take part in is Lectio Divina (which means divine reading). Lectio Divina is a way of becoming immersed in the Scriptures, it is a spiritual discipline of meditation on Scripture in which you slowly and prayerfully read and re-read a text in order to listen and apply God’s word to your life.
There are four stages of Lectio Divina and these can be thought of as compass points around a circle, with the Holy Spirit moving seamlessly between them. Lectio Divina helps us hear specifically and individually from God through Scripture, guided by the Holy Spirit, and it helps to deepen our relationship with Him.
This can be a calming and prayerful experience which you can recreate at home with your family.

Wakehurst Place - Y3 Trip
Thu 22 May 2025On Thursday, year 3 had a fantastic day at Wakehurst. The children got to work with microscopes in the lab. to explore the different parts of a flower. They showed their wonderful knowledge by using correct terminology and really impressed our parent volunteers and Kew Gardens staff. Later, we explored the gardens to look for evidence of pollinators and learnt that after pollination, the flower dies, leaving behind just the ovary where the seeds are made. Did you know that the horse chestnut flowers are yellows, but after pollination they turn pink so that the bees know they've already been pollinated?!!!
After parachute fun at lunchtime, we complete an art task using natural materials to create a piece of art that we'd been inspired by - we had bees, gardeners, forests, and of course lots of flowers being created. The children talked confidently and enthusiastically about their designs and rationale behind them. We were joined by Frankie Fox and Prayer Bear who also had a wonderful day! Thank you to Wakehurst and our parent volunteers - we had a great day and couldn't have done it without your help and support!

Swimming Gala
Wed 07 May 2025On Wednesday, schools across Crowborough met for the annual inter-school swim gala. The St. Mary’s swim team delivered an outstanding performance, showcasing not only their athletic talent but also their exemplary sportsmanship throughout the event. Whilst being cheered on by many parents in the spectators’ seats, our swimmers demonstrated incredible determination, skill, and teamwork in every race.
From thrilling freestyle sprints to demanding medley relays, each swimmer gave their best. Beyond the races, the team displayed true sportsmanship, cheering on teammates and applauding competitors alike. They represented our school with maturity, respect, and a spirit of camaraderie.
We are immensely proud of every swimmer who took part. Their discipline, positive attitude, and resilience, both in and out of the water, make them exceptional role models for the school community. Overall in the competition, we scored third. Each team member contributed to a memorable and inspiring event. We congratulate them all and look forward to future successes in the pool. Well done, St. Mary’s and a huge thank you to Mrs Tanner and Ms Rickwood for their relentless hard work and support of the children!

Year 6 WW2 Day
Wed 02 Apr 2025Here are a selection of photos from our WW2 day last term. A little snippet of what we did:
-
Year 6 started their school day with the windows blacked out, and were shown a video of what to do if you hear an air raid siren
-
We then spent our morning talking about upcycling which was very popular during WW2. We used left over felt pieces and accessories to make bookmarks for our loved ones or for ourselves.
-
Suddenly the siren sounded! We all had to get under our tables and stay out of sight until the all clear was given.
-
Once we recovered, it was announced that we were being evacuated to countryside towns to save us all from the bombings in our area.
-
After break we boarded the train and were given our name tags for our luggage. Whilst on the train we met other children and played popular games from 1940s whilst we tucked into some train snacks!
-
Once we arrived at our destination, we were all given an envelope containing information about the families we were going to be housing with.
-
After lunch we used this information to write home to our families about our experiences with our guardians so far.
-
By the end of the day, the war was over so we played musical statues and had a celebration party!

Typing
Fri 28 Mar 2025Year 3 had a great morning typing up their letters. Typing is a tricky skill but the children all tried incredibly hard to type up their fabulous speeches - there is a copy in their bag.
BBC Bitesize is a great site to help support the children learning to type, purple mash is also a great resource to help practise their typing skills - use the search bar to find typing activities.

Football report
Fri 28 Mar 2025On Wednesday 19th March, after a long-wet winter, the year 5&6 boys finally kicked off their league season. When last in action, we ran out convincing winners of the Wadhurst tournament so excitement filled the air as the boys and their ever-present management team of Mr. Neill and Mr. Leach travelled over to Forest Row – a big thank you to the parents for transporting them.
We started the game slowly and went 1-0 behind midway through the first half but this proved to be the catalyst that was needed as from this point on, we rediscovered our identity – we pressed effectively, passed well on a tricky pitch and after a half-time pep talk, we took control of the game. First to score was goal-machine Freddie L who gleefully ran onto an excellent pass before unleashing a low shot into the bottom corner. 1-1. Not long after, an excellent corner was expertly guided home, again by Freddie L, to give us the lead for the first time in the match. It was a good close game and as time looked to be running out, George latched onto a through-ball and brilliantly scored from an acute angle to give us a well-earned 3-1 victory and a great start to the league season. Ben made some fantastic saves, especially early in the game to keep us in it and there was some great solid defending from Mally, George and Dillon. Henry, Jimmy and Zac ran tirelessly and linked up well in midfield whilst Alfie and Freddie provided good focal points in attack. Well done boys. -
Year 3 - Circus Day
Wed 19 Mar 2025On Wednesday, Green Class had a fabulous day learning a range of circus skills. The day was fully funded by our class cake sale which made it even more special. We learnt different ways to spin plates, we had a go at juggling one, two or three scarfs, trying to add turns and claps for an extra challenge. We also practised our balancing skills on the tightrope and had a go at different stilts. We loved using the slower sticks to create turns, flips and spins and even had a go at diablos and balancing peacock feathers. We all had lots of fun, and although we didn't learn maths or English that day, we did learn a lot about resilience and perseverance, encouraging each other and developing our skills. Thank you to our parent community for helping to fundraise such an amazing amount!
